His shaven head and large eyes are something you cannot forget, he is a charismatic and energetic figure, and he commands respect when he's on the field. For people who dont know Collina is, Collina is one of the Top rated football refrees of modern time. He also officiated the recent 2002 WC final between Brazil and Germany. Collina has been rated the Worlds best refree for 5 times.
The reason i am writing about him is that he recently he was involved in a controversy where he was offered a huge sponsorship deal by Opel, which is also the Team sponsor for AC Milan( serie A winners). The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) had accused collina that there would be a conflict of intrest if he happened accept the deal and officiate in Serie A and it said he would only be allowed to officiate Serie B (second division) .However Collina's stand was that a refree has to be believed,this is what he said,
"After 28 years I've decided to hand in my resignation," said Collina.
"People must believe in a referee. In the end, we have all lost out."
For me it wouldn't have been a problem to referee in Serie B, but either they (the FIGC) have faith in us referees or they don't.
"If they don't, then we have to go. Without trust we cannot move forward."
Collina is to Football like David sheperd is to Cricket. They both are figures that deserve respect.When he is around you can be rest assured that the match proceeds in a fair way. A sponsorship deal for a refree is something unheard of and that shows how famous a man he is. This is not the right way to end a great career and hope a better solution comes out to this controversy.What do you guys think?
